Setting up for Python programming There are several options for you to setup for Python programming, depending on the type of operating system your computer is running. The option you choose will also depend on how much you want your programming environment to resemble the programming environment in class. Running an Ubuntu MATE 18.04 virtual machine This is the option that will make your programming environment the most like the programming environment in class. You can choose this option regardless of the operating system you have on your computer. Go to this to download Oracle VirtualBox for your operating system. Also download the correct Extension Pack for the version of VirtualBox that you are obtaining. When installing, you can accept all the defaults.

On Windows there will be several instances during the install that ask you to allow installation of drivers from Oracle. Click on Install when these pop up.

After the installation is done, uncheck any box that will run VirtualBox and click on Finish. Then, install the Extension Pack. On Windows, you need to be logged into an administrator account to install the extension pack. On Mac OSX or Linux, you will be prompted for an administrator password, so you can be in any account. Download Ubuntu MATE Desktop 18.04.1 Go to and click on the 64-bit version. Then, select the LTS version.

At the time this page was made (August 2018), this is 18.04.1 LTS (Bionic). The filename at that time was 'ubuntu-mate-18.04.1-desktop-amd64.iso'. We are using Ubuntu MATE because it is a lightweight version of Linux that uses the Gnome interface. Creating a virtual machine with VirtualBox Create a new machine and name it 'cent110'. Change the operating system to 'Linux', and version to 'Ubuntu (64bit)'. Click Next and set the base memory size to 2000 MB.

Click Add and navigate to the location of the iso image file you downloaded earlier. Click Open, click on the image file, and click Continue. The, click Start. Select English for language and click on Install Ubuntu.

Select the minimal installation. Do not check the box 'Download updates while installing' and just hit Continue.

Choose 'Erase disk and install Ubuntu' and click 'Install Now'. Navigate to Honolulu for time (if not already selected), click Continue. Accept default 'English US' for keyboard and hit Continue. For the user name, choose the username you want and for the password use something that contains numbers letters and special characters. Click Continue. Installation will continue and complete. A message stating that the system needs to be restarted will come up.
