Audacity For Mac 10.5.8

I'm using Audacity 1.2.5 (OS 10.5.8) to digitize my record collection at 44100 Hz, 16 bit. I have the files so that the levels are just below clipping and they sound great in Audacity.

Audacity for Mac is a powerful audio editing tool that surpasses default OS X tools. The downsides are a dated and sometimes clunky interface and a cumbersome installation process.

When i import them into iTunes (9.0.2), however, they sound muffled. Somehow the levels are getting lowered, i think. I tried exporting mp3, aiff, and wave files all with the same result. I even tried burning to a cd via Toast then importing into iTunes to no avail. The funny thing is if i take the exported files into Toast or Soundbooth they sound just as good as in Audacity. Kinda makes me think it's something going on with iTunes.
