I vastly prefer the general user experience on a mac, but love Excel and desperately want to use the 2013 Windows version rather than the Mac version. I'm debating either running Parallels on my macbook so that I can run Excel 2013 from that machine, or just purchasing a new Asus Zenbook.

What do folks think? A few thoughts I had, in no particular order: - Zenbook is only about $700, and has great performance. For the specs, this seems like an awesome deal. I'm not sure how much Parallels + Windows for the macbook would run me, but it is probably much less. - I worry that, even if I get Parallels for my macbook, the experience won't really 'feel' like Windows Excel because of the differences in keys/shortcuts ('command' for instance). Does anyone who vastly prefers Windows Excel have experience running it with Parallels?

At first Mac Excel seemed a little weird but I got used to it quickly and now I flow between both seamlessly. If you haven't put much effort into Mac Excel (not saying you haven't) I would absolutely give it a chance. An answer to the options you presented: I am not qualified to give you a technical answer BUT. I am leery about running anything on any system that wasn't made for that system, therefor I would get the Zenbook(IF I absolutely had to have the Windows version). Like I said, I use both Windows and Mac versions and I like both and I find it quite easy to flow between the two. I've been a mixed windows and Mac user for a long time. I will say my experience with parallels has been excellent. Best photo storage and editing software for mac.

In '07 I was in a grad school program for logistics and supply chain that included a big chunk of analytics model building and some systems development work. I had a core 2 dup MBP 15', it wasn't the latest and greatest machine in 2007 but it worked quite well.

Other than the obvious problem between the actual key locations it was seamless windows Excel experience. I even got into running MS SQL Express and MS IIS in the parallels environment to serve applications to both the Windows and Mac environment. I found in general my 'windows' environment ran better than my cohort with various pedigrees of laptops.

I can't speak to raw processing power in excel, most of my heavy lifting was data analytics through MS Access or SQL Express in Windows or MATLAB native on Mac OSX, • • • •. I use Parallels w/ Office 2013 on my Mac, as i installed 2011 and didn't like it. Very straightforward to get it setup - simply have your Windows Install media ready, launch parallels, point it to your media and let it do its thing. I had to change a few options to get rid of the windows start bar and things (I use Coherence mode rather than a Windows desktop), but now Excel runs within its own Window like a Mac app.
