My business partner and several others in our company run windows 10 with Office 365 and excel 2013. Several of us in the company running mac have upgraded our office 365 packages to Office 2016 for mac. The windows users have since produced a number of excel spreadsheets that we cannot open - the mac 'application is not responding' label comes up; it appears a generic issue rather than an install issue as all mac users find the same problem. The files open without issue when we resort back to excel for mac 2011.

There appears to be a compatibility conflict between the new excel for mac 2016, and the excel 2013 running on windows 10.
